Leopardus Tilcayo: How a Rescued Kitten in Bolivia Led Scientists to the First New Cat Species Discovered in Over 100 Years

Deep in the cloud forests of the Bolivian Andes, a wild cat that local families had quietly known about for generations has just earned an official place in the scientific record. Named Leopardus tilcayo — the Tilcayo tiger cat — it’s the first entirely new living cat species formally described by science since 1923, when researchers last identified the pampas cat. That’s a gap of more than a hundred years, in a field where most people assume every large, distinctive animal has long since been catalogued.

It Started With a Kitten Nobody Could Identify

The discovery traces back to 2016, when a man in rural Bolivia came across a kitten alone on a forest road. Assuming it was simply an unusual-looking domestic cat, he took it home and raised it. Only after the animal grew older did it become obvious it wasn’t domestic at all — its size, behavior, and coat marked it as something wild. He brought it to Senda Verde Animal Refuge, a wildlife sanctuary in the Bolivian Andes, where it would end up changing what scientists thought they knew about South America’s small wild cats.

That’s where biologist Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz, a National Geographic Explorer and founder of the Bolivian Felids Research Program, first encountered it.

“I took a hundred pictures of it,” she recalled. “I was so fascinated.”

Her initial assumption was that the animal belonged to a known species, the northern tiger cat (Leopardus tigrinus). But a few details didn’t sit right — its rosette spots were noticeably larger and differently shaped than those seen on tiger cats in neighboring countries. That small inconsistency was the first thread in what would become a decade-long scientific investigation.

What the Tilcayo Tiger Cat Actually Looks Like

Despite its name, the Tilcayo tiger cat is anything but fierce-looking. It measures about 18 inches from head to body and weighs roughly 3 pounds — genuinely smaller than most house cats. Its coat is light brown, patterned with bold, irregular, leopard-style rosettes, and it has short rounded ears, long whiskers, and a slightly scrunched facial profile that gives it an almost expressive, cartoon-like appearance.

It lives in the Yungas cloud forests along the eastern slopes of the Andes — a steep, misty, densely vegetated habitat that’s notoriously difficult to survey. That terrain likely explains why the species evaded formal scientific recognition for so long, even though it was never truly “hidden”: local communities already had a name for it, passed down through generations.

The Decade of Genetic Work That Confirmed a New Species

Turning “this cat looks a bit different” into “this is a new species” required years of rigorous genetic comparison. Nogales-Ascarrunz worked with researchers including Eduardo Eizirik and Jonas Lescroart, analyzing complete genomes from dozens of related wild cats, including specimens preserved in museum collections for decades.

The results, published this week in the journal Current Biology, showed the Bolivian cat had diverged from its closest known relatives approximately 1.4 million years ago. Researchers describe that evolutionary distance as comparable to the gap between modern lions and the extinct cave lions that once roamed Ice Age Europe — a striking amount of separation for an animal that, on the surface, resembles its cousins closely enough to have gone unnoticed for so long.

Rather than invent a new name from scratch, the research team named the species Leopardus tilcayo, adopting the word Bolivian locals already used for it. When asked about its origins, the answer researchers received was simple: grandparents in the region had always called it that.

A Species That’s Been Quietly Splitting for Over a Decade

The Tilcayo’s story doesn’t exist in isolation — it’s the latest chapter in a longer scientific reassessment of South America’s tiger cats that’s been unfolding since 2013. That year, researchers split what was thought to be a single tiger cat species into two: the northern tiger cat (Leopardus tigrinus) and the southern tiger cat (Leopardus guttulus). In 2024, a third species, the clouded tiger cat (Leopardus pardinoides), was added after researchers found it occupying high-altitude cloud forests across Central and South America.

Leopardus tilcayo now brings that total to five recognized tiger cat species, according to the new genomic analysis — a dramatic revision of a group scientists once treated as one or two animals. The study’s authors note that the margay, another small South American wild cat, may harbor similarly hidden diversity that hasn’t yet been uncovered.

Why Splitting One Species Into Five Matters for Conservation

This isn’t just a taxonomic technicality. Tiger cats as a group are already considered vulnerable by conservation authorities, and every time a broadly distributed “species” gets split into several narrower ones, each new species inherits a smaller, more fragile share of the original range. A population that once looked stable on paper can suddenly look far more precarious once it’s recognized as genetically distinct and geographically limited.

That’s the situation the Tilcayo now finds itself in. Researchers have so far confirmed its presence only in Bolivia’s Yungas region, and much of its basic biology remains unknown — including what it eats, how it reproduces, and how many individuals might exist in the wild.

What Comes Next

The cat whose rescue set this entire discovery in motion still lives at Senda Verde sanctuary, now serving as a living reference point for ongoing research into the species. Scientists involved in the study say the same advanced genomic techniques used to confirm the Tilcayo could help identify other cryptic small-cat species hiding within already-known populations across South America, Africa, and Asia.

In other words, this may not be an isolated headline. If the pattern of the last decade holds, the Tilcayo could be one of several similar discoveries still to come — each one a reminder that, even now, the natural world hasn’t finished surprising the people studying it.
