Wendy’s is bringing back its original yellow packaging for fries, chicken nuggets, and Frostys, with the nationwide rollout beginning September 28, 2026, and expanding into 2027. Chief Marketing and Customer Growth Officer Tariq Hassan confirmed the change was driven directly by years of customer demand, calling it “one of the most requested things we’ve ever had come back.”
Some fast-food comebacks are about the menu. This one’s about the cup in your hand.
Why Wendy’s Is Bringing Back the Yellow
Wendy’s confirmed that it’s reviving the bright yellow packaging that defined the brand for decades before it shifted to the red-and-white look most customers know today — and the company isn’t shy about why.
“Fans asked. Constantly,” Hassan said. “It’s one of the most requested things we’ve ever had come back.”
The yellow design dates back to the very beginning of the chain. Founder Dave Thomas opened the first Wendy’s location in Columbus, Ohio, in November 1969, and yellow packaging was the standard for years afterward. When the brand eventually moved to its more modern look, a loyal chunk of the fanbase never quite let it go — and social media has spent years keeping the nostalgia alive, from stories about after-school stops to family Frosty runs built around that unmistakable bright yellow cup.
What’s Actually Changing
The return centers on packaging for a handful of core items:
- French fry cartons
- Chicken nugget boxes
- Frosty cups
- Other related containers
Burgers and other sandwiches will also get the throwback treatment at participating locations. Wendy’s is framing the move as a celebration of its roots, paired with the same messaging it’s leaned on for years — fresh, never-frozen beef and made-to-order burgers.
One thing Wendy’s has been clear about: this is strictly a packaging change. Plenty of longtime fans have used the announcement to push for more — better buns, fresher ingredients, the fuller “old Wendy’s” experience they remember — but the company hasn’t announced any recipe or quality changes tied to the rollout. For now, it’s about the look, not what’s inside it.
When You’ll Actually See It
The nationwide rollout kicks off Monday, September 28, 2026, and will expand across U.S. locations over the following months, continuing into 2027. Not every restaurant will flip the switch on the same day, so depending on where you live, you might spot the yellow packaging a little earlier — or have to wait a bit longer.
Wendy’s hasn’t billed this as a permanent, forever change, but it’s expected to stick around long enough for fans to get their fix of nostalgia.
Mark your calendar for September 28. Next time you order fries or a Frosty, there’s a real chance it lands in your hand exactly the way it did decades ago.
