A Kalamazoo County family is mourning one daughter and waiting anxiously for news about another.

What Happened on West R Avenue

The crash happened shortly before 3:30 a.m. Sunday on West R Avenue in Texas Township, Kalamazoo County. Five Mattawan High School students were in the vehicle when it left the roadway and struck a tree, according to preliminary information.

Two of the students were killed: 15-year-old Jordyn Bigham and another 16-year-old student. The three other students were hospitalized. Jada Bigham, 16, who is Jordyn’s older sister, was critically injured. The other two survivors, ages 15 and 17, were reported to be in critical but stable condition.

Authorities have not released details about who was driving, what led the vehicle to leave the road, or whether anything other than the crash itself contributed. The name of the other student who died has not been released.

A Family and a School Community Grieving

Both Bigham sisters attended Mattawan High School. Friends, relatives, and members of the school community have rallied around the families affected, and messages of support have poured in for the injured students and those who lost loved ones.

For Jordyn and Jada’s family, the loss is compounded by uncertainty: one daughter will not come home, and the other is fighting to recover.

How to Help

A GoFundMe fundraiser has been established to support Jada and the Bigham family as they navigate Jordyn’s death and Jada’s recovery. If you want to donate, use a link shared directly by the family or the school, so you can be sure the money goes to the right place.
