Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown has avoided immediate imprisonment after receiving an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, over a violent confrontation at a London nightclub in February 2023. His vocal coach and co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, also received a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to affray.
The sentences were handed down at Southwark Crown Court by Judge Tony Baumgartner. Brown, 37, must avoid committing another offence that results in a conviction during the 12-month suspension period to avoid the risk of serving his suspended sentence.
Brown was also ordered to pay £1,500 towards prosecution costs. Akinlolu received a four-month suspended sentence, also suspended for 12 months, and was ordered to pay £1,500 towards prosecution costs.
The ruling brings a significant development in the case surrounding the February 2023 incident at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, London, where music producer Abraham Diaw was attacked during a confrontation involving Brown and others.
Judge Describes Chris Brown’s Bottle Attack as Dangerous
During sentencing, Judge Tony Baumgartner addressed the violence directed at Diaw, highlighting Brown’s repeated use of a glass bottle during the confrontation.
The judge said Brown struck Diaw with the bottle, including twice on the head, describing the conduct as plainly dangerous and warning that it risked causing significantly more serious injuries than those ultimately sustained.
Although the incident was brief, the judge characterized the violence as intense. He also noted that the attack was not planned, with the short duration of the confrontation considered as part of the sentencing assessment.
Brown had initially faced more serious allegations, including assault and attempting to cause grievous bodily harm. However, he pleaded guilty to affray in July 2026, and the more serious charges were dropped as the case proceeded.
Affray is an offence under UK law that can carry a maximum prison sentence of three years.

Chris Brown’s Vocal Coach Also Receives a Suspended Sentence
Brown was not the only defendant sentenced over the nightclub confrontation. His vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, pleaded guilty to affray and received a four-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months.
The judge said Akinlolu did not initiate the violence but later became an active participant, playing a significant role in the attack.
Both men avoided immediate imprisonment under the suspended sentences. However, the sentences remain custodial penalties, and a further conviction during the suspension period could result in the suspended terms being activated, subject to the applicable legal process.
The court ordered both defendants to contribute £1,500 each towards the prosecution’s costs.
Judge Says Chris Brown’s Fame Did Not Entitle Him to Special Treatment
During the sentencing hearing, the judge made clear that Brown’s international fame did not entitle him to preferential treatment under the law.
However, the court considered several factors when determining the appropriate sentence, including Brown’s charitable activities and his responsibilities as a father of four.
The judge also considered Brown’s previous convictions involving violence, describing them as relevant but old.
The sentencing remarks emphasized that the suspended terms were still punishments. The judge explained that the sentences were the shortest custodial terms he considered proportionate to the seriousness of the offences and that the statutory rules governing the suspension of short prison sentences applied in this case.
He told both defendants not to underestimate the seriousness of the orders imposed, stressing that a suspended sentence is still a custodial sentence, even when the defendants do not enter prison immediately.
What Happened at Tape Nightclub in February 2023?
The case stems from a confrontation at Tape nightclub in Mayfair in February 2023. Brown was accused of attacking music producer Abraham Diaw with a bottle during the incident, which was captured on CCTV.
The allegations led to a lengthy legal process. Brown initially faced more serious charges before pleading guilty to affray in July 2026.
After leaving the UK following the original incident, Brown was arrested in Manchester in May 2025 when he returned to the country for a concert. He was subsequently released on substantial bail and was able to continue touring while the case moved through the courts.
His guilty plea and sentencing have now brought the proceedings to a major turning point.
Chris Brown Avoids Prison but Faces a 12-Month Suspension Period
The suspended sentence means Brown will not serve his eight-month prison term immediately. However, the outcome does not mean he was cleared of wrongdoing: he pleaded guilty to affray and received a custodial sentence that has been suspended.
The same applies to Akinlolu, whose four-month term was suspended for 12 months.
The case has generated mixed reactions among fans and online commentators, with supporters gathering outside the court as the sentencing took place.
For Brown, the ruling allows him to avoid immediate imprisonment while leaving him subject to the conditions of the suspended sentence. The next 12 months will therefore be significant, as a further conviction could have consequences for whether he is required to serve the prison term imposed by the court.
