Ryan James Yaindl, 26, of West Easton, Pennsylvania, has been charged with felony criminal homicide after allegedly fatally shooting Jason Derr, 52, his mother’s boyfriend of 13 years, at their shared Spring Street home Saturday morning. Authorities say Yaindl intervened after Derr allegedly assaulted his mother, Tara Yaindl. Yaindl was arraigned and denied bail. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
A Saturday morning confrontation at a West Easton home ended with one man dead, another facing a homicide charge, and a family caught in the middle of what authorities describe as a pattern of abuse.
What Investigators Say Happened
Pennsylvania State Police responded to the 100 block of Spring Street shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday after a report of a shooting. According to court records, Tara Yaindl told police she was in the living room around 8:15 a.m. when Derr asked her to have sex with him. When she refused, she said, he began to head-butt her, and she had to kick and push him away. Derr then allegedly pulled her off a recliner and began dragging her toward the dining room.
Tara Yaindl says she called out for her son, who was in an upstairs bedroom. Derr let go of her and began walking up the staircase; she tried to grab his shirt to stop him, but he continued up, according to the affidavit. She then heard gunshots and heard her son say, “I think I killed him, call 911.”
Investigators say Ryan Yaindl encountered Derr on the second floor and fired multiple rounds. Derr was found unconscious with gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Northampton County Coroner’s Office. A firearm was recovered from the dining room.
Yaindl immediately told responding officers he had fired the shots, according to the affidavit of probable cause, and directed his mother to call 911. He and his mother waited outside for police to arrive.
Charges and Court Proceedings
Northampton County District Attorney Stephen Baratta announced the homicide charge against Yaindl on Monday. Yaindl was arraigned Saturday night before District Judge Robert Christian Weber, who denied bail, and he was remanded to Northampton County Prison. Allentown-based attorney John Waldron is representing Yaindl; he could not immediately be reached for comment.
A preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m. on September 24 before District Judge Richard Yetter III, who will determine whether there’s sufficient evidence to send the case to the Northampton County Court of Common Pleas.
As with any criminal charge, this is an allegation. Yaindl is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
A Pattern of Alleged Abuse
Tara Yaindl told investigators Derr had physically abused her throughout their 13-year relationship, but that she never contacted police because she wanted to protect him. She described her son as “gentle” and “non-confrontational,” telling investigators he had never intervened in their disputes before.
Court records reportedly connect Derr to a separate domestic violence case as well, involving allegations that he assaulted a girlfriend and her juvenile daughter while intoxicated, which resulted in simple assault and harassment charges, a $7,500 bail requirement, and a protection-from-abuse order against him. Some identifying details tied to that case — including the alleged victim’s age for Derr and the address involved — differ from what’s reported about Derr in the Yaindl shooting, so it has not been independently confirmed that this involves the same individual.
Investigation Continues
The case remains under investigation by multiple agencies, including Pennsylvania State Police Troop M’s Major Case Team, Forensic Services Unit, and Collision Analysis Reconstruction Specialist Unit, along with the Easton Police Department, Wilson Borough Police Department, and the Northampton County Coroner’s and District Attorney’s offices.
