A 54-year-old Clarington man, Duff Mahoney, was killed Tuesday, September 15, in a head-on collision on State Route 7 in Salem Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
What Happened
Troopers responded to State Route 7 near milepost 21 after receiving a report of a two-vehicle crash involving a 2002 Subaru Outback and a 2007 Ford Focus. According to the preliminary investigation, 27-year-old Brady Dye of Lowell, Ohio, was driving the Subaru northbound, while Mahoney was driving the Focus southbound.
Investigators say the Subaru crossed left of center, entering the southbound lane and striking Mahoney’s Focus head-on. Following the impact, the Subaru came to rest in the roadway, while Mahoney’s Focus traveled off the right side of the road.
Mahoney sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. Both drivers were reportedly wearing their seat belts at the time of the collision, according to WTRF.
Emergency Response
A number of local agencies responded to the crash site, including Monroe County Fire and EMS, Clarington EMS, Sardis Fire, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the Monroe County Coroner’s Office, and the Ohio Department of Transportation. Both vehicles were later removed from the scene by Braden’s Towing.
Investigation Ongoing
The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, which has not released further details on why the Subaru crossed into the opposing lane. No information about citations or enforcement action related to the crash has been made public at this time.
