Sergeant Peter Thatcher, 45, a Wyoming County Correctional Officer, his wife Sandra Thatcher, 45, and their children, 11-year-old Noah and 10-year-old Layla, all of Tunkhannock, were killed Saturday morning when their sedan left the roadway and fell more than 60 feet down an embankment in Gibson Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
An entire family — a mother, a father, and their two young children — is gone after a devastating single-vehicle crash Saturday morning in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania State Police say. What should have been an ordinary Saturday drive ended in a tragedy that has left an entire community searching for words.
What Happened
The crash occurred at approximately 10:15 a.m. Saturday in the area of 1365 Rock Mountain Drive in Gibson Township, according to a Pennsylvania State Police news release. Troopers were dispatched to the scene within a minute of the crash being reported.
Police say the family’s sedan left the roadway along Rock Mountain Drive and plunged more than 60 feet down a steep embankment. The crash occurred on property belonging to Rock Mountain Bible Camp — and it was camp staff who first discovered the vehicle. Camp director Reid Anderson said the camp contacted authorities as soon as the car was found.
By the time emergency responders reached the bottom of the embankment, it was too late. All four members of the Thatcher family were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities identified the family as Sergeant Peter Thatcher, 45, who served as a correctional officer with Wyoming County; his wife, Sandra Thatcher, 45; and their two children, 11-year-old Noah and 10-year-old Layla. The family called Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania, home.
For a family of four to be lost together, in a single moment, is the kind of loss that reshapes a community — and Tunkhannock is already feeling it.
What We Still Don’t Know
Investigators have not yet said what caused the Thatchers’ vehicle to leave Rock Mountain Drive. It’s still unclear whether road conditions, weather, or another factor played a role in the crash.
Multiple fire and EMS units, along with the Susquehanna County Coroner’s Office, responded to the scene. Trooper Stephen Florey is leading the investigation and is working to reconstruct exactly what happened in the moments before the crash.
