Ten-man Tottenham Hotspur drew 1-1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday evening after Dominic Solanke headed in a cross from Sandro Tonali in the second minute of stoppage time. Bryan Mbeumo had put United ahead in the 73rd minute, and Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for a headbutt on Luke Shaw five minutes later. The draw lifts Spurs off the bottom of the table but leaves both clubs still searching for answers.
With a one-goal lead and an extra man for the final stretch, Manchester United had everything they needed to end a miserable run. Instead, they ended up booed off again.
A Slow, Frustrating Start
Tottenham dominated the early exchanges and should have done more with them. United goalkeeper Senne Lammens had to make an important save in the third minute after his own pass was cut out, with Solanke getting a shot on goal.
United kept inviting pressure as Roberto De Zerbi’s side stayed purposeful. Mohammed Kudus fizzed narrowly wide from a cutback by Savio, and a moment of comic United defending gave Conor Gallagher a chance that Spurs failed to take. Later, Solanke turned a Savio cross over the bar from close range. Amad Diallo could have eased the growing unrest in the stands had he beaten Antonín Kinský on the break, but he didn’t. At the other end, a Youri Tielemans goal was ruled out after Matheus Cunha cut the ball back from a position where it had gone out of play.
The home crowd was already restless, and boos rang out at halftime. The sentiment wasn’t helped when Cunha called for more backing from supporters, a remark that irked some in the stands.
Mbeumo Breaks Through
Both managers made changes after the break, including the debut of Carlos Baleba for United, and the game swung from end to end. Bruno Fernandes tried an audacious effort that came to nothing, and Kobbie Mainoo made a key challenge to turn a Savio attempt over the bar.
Then came a rare flash of quality. In the 73rd minute, Cunha played the ball to Mbeumo inside the box, and the forward turned sharply and slammed a low finish past Kinský in front of the Stretford End. It was a moment of relief for a United side that hadn’t won a league game in several matches.
Bentancur Sent Off
Five minutes later, Tottenham’s task got harder. Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for a headbutt on Luke Shaw, leaving Spurs with ten men and United with the lead and a numerical advantage for the final stages.
Solanke Rescues a Point
United failed to finish the job. In the second minute of stoppage time, Tonali was allowed to send in a cross, and Solanke glanced it home after woeful defending from Lisandro Martínez, who had scored a calamitous own goal against Fulham in the club’s previous league outing. Boos greeted the final whistle, just as they had at halftime.

What It Means for Both Clubs
For United, the draw extends a difficult start. Their five points from five games match their joint-worst opening to a Premier League season, and their wait for a league win now stretches to a fourth match. They also failed to beat ten men, as they had in their last home league game against Manchester City.
Michael Carrick and De Zerbi were the favorites in the bookmakers’ sack race odds heading into the weekend. For Tottenham, who remain without a Premier League win this season, the point lifts them off the bottom of the table and showed the kind of mental strength that suggests their winless run may end soon.
