Chelsea 2-0 Manchester United: Morgan Rogers Strikes, Cole Palmer Converts Penalty After Lisandro Martínez Is Sent Off for Second Yellow Card, Deepening Michael Carrick’s Crisis as United Extend Winless Run to Nine Games

Chelsea 2-0 Manchester United was the final score at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31, as Morgan Rogers scored in the 50th minute and Cole Palmer converted a penalty in the 64th, one minute after United’s Lisandro Martínez was sent off for a second yellow card. The result left Michael Carrick’s side without a win in nine matches in all competitions, their worst run since 1988-89, and brought chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” from the home supporters.

Chelsea 2-0 Manchester United looked a very different story at half-time. United had been the better side for long spells of a testy first half, only to unravel after the break in a Premier League defeat that has left their manager under growing pressure.

A First Half United Should Have Won

The first half ended goalless, but it was United who created the clearer chances. Matheus Cunha had a goal disallowed after the Brazilian was judged to be half a yard offside. Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes also had good opportunities, and Fernandes missed the best of them. Bryan Mbeumo sent him through with an excellent pass into the left half-space, but his shot was too powerful and flew high over the bar.

Fernandes later set up another chance for Mbeumo with a low, driven cross through the box, but his teammate was just too late to tap it in. If either had gone in, the second half might have felt very different for United.

Rogers Opens the Scoring

Chelsea needed only five minutes after the restart to break the deadlock. United lost possession in their own half, and Rogers took advantage of the space that opened up, skipping past two challenges and lifting the ball over goalkeeper Senne Lammens in the 50th minute. Harry Maguire was left backpedaling as Chelsea broke through the middle, and United’s cover was slow to arrive.

Martínez Sees Red and Palmer Makes It Two

The match turned on one passage of play. Lisandro Martínez was booked in the 59th minute for pulling back Rogers. Moments later, during a Chelsea corner, he challenged Wesley Fofana in the penalty area, and Fofana went down. Referee Peter Bankes first allowed play to continue, but after a VAR review he awarded a penalty and showed Martínez a second yellow card, leaving United with 10 men in the 63rd minute.

Palmer stepped up in the 64th minute and sent Lammens the wrong way. The goalkeeper got a hand to the shot but could not keep it out, and Chelsea led 2-0.

Chelsea Control the Rest of the Match

Chelsea managed the rest of the game against 10 men. Estevão thought he had a third, but he was just offside when he beat Maguire in a three-on-one situation. Carrick responded by bringing on Mason Mount and Ayden Heaven, but United struggled to create anything while a man down. Chelsea celebrated on social media with a simple message: “Three points!”

What It Means for Michael Carrick and United

The defeat is United’s second straight in the Premier League and extends their winless run to nine matches in all competitions. That is their longest such run since 1988-89. They have seven points in the league this season.

The reaction from the stands was swift, with Chelsea supporters chanting “you’re getting sacked in the morning.” For Carrick, the sting is as much about how the match was lost as the result. United were the better team in the first half and gave it away within 20 minutes of the restart through a lapse in concentration and a costly dismissal from one of their most senior defenders.

Fernandes returned to the starting lineup, but his missed chance in the first half summed up an afternoon when United did not take their opportunities.

What’s Next

United’s schedule does not ease. They return to European action this week, hosting Roma at Old Trafford, as the pressure on Carrick grows with every match. For Chelsea, it was a comfortable and well-managed win, and a reminder of how quickly a game can turn when the opposition lose their discipline.
