Bayern Munich 2-2 Arsenal: Declan Rice’s Late Equaliser Rescues Gunners in Champions League Thriller After Harry Kane Penalty, Eberechi Eze Opener and Bukayo Saka Injury Scare

Bayern Munich 2-2 Arsenal was the final score at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night, with Declan Rice’s late equaliser earning Mikel Arteta’s side a hard-fought point in a Champions League league-phase thriller. Eberechi Eze scored the opener after replacing the injured Bukayo Saka, Alphonso Davies equalised from a Harry Kane pass, and Kane then put Bayern ahead from the penalty spot before Rice rescued Arsenal.

Arsenal left Munich with a point, and for a spell in the second half, it looked as if they might leave with nothing. Declan Rice’s late finish saved the Gunners at the Allianz Arena, in a match that swung back and forth, featured an injury to Bukayo Saka, and left many of Arsenal’s players disappointed to have only drawn.

Saka Limps Off, Eze Steps In

The night took a bad turn for Arsenal almost immediately. Just 10 minutes in, Bukayo Saka went down with a suspected thigh problem after attempting to play a pass with no one around him. He limped off and was replaced by Eberechi Eze.

Eze made an instant impact. The midfielder latched on to a superb pass from Martin Ødegaard to score the opening goal of the game, with the video assistant referee needing to intervene after he was initially flagged offside. The goal stood, and Arsenal had a surprise lead in Munich.

Kane and Davies Turn It Around

Bayern’s response was swift. Harry Kane picked up the ball in midfield and split the Arsenal back line with a pinpoint pass for Alphonso Davies, who finished from close range in the 35th minute to make it 1-1. It was one of several eye-catching passes from Kane during the match.

After the break, Bayern went in front. Around the hour mark, the hosts were awarded a penalty for handball inside the Arsenal area. Kane sent goalkeeper David Raya the wrong way from 12 yards to make it 2-1, a goal that extended his scoring streak to 10 consecutive Champions League matches, one short of the record held by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Arsenal Refuse to Give Up

Bayern piled on the pressure as they searched for a third goal, but the Gunners held firm and then struck back. Rice exchanged passes with substitute Viktor Gyökeres before drilling a low shot into the bottom corner late on to make it 2-2.

Arsenal then pushed for a winner. Jurrien Timber forced Manuel Neuer into an acrobatic save before the final whistle, and substitutes including Gyökeres and Myles Lewis-Skelly helped Arteta’s side finish the match on the front foot. The club summed up the effort in a post on social media: “BATTLING UNTIL THE END.”

Why the Draw Means More Than It Looks

There was a telling moment at the final whistle, when quite a few Arsenal players looked disappointed to have only drawn. It said a lot about how far the club has come since the days when a trip to Bayern felt like an inevitable thumping.

A point in Munich is still a valuable return in a competitive Matchday 3 encounter, and it keeps Arsenal in a healthy position in the Champions League league phase after a strong start to the campaign.

What It Means for Arsenal

The most pressing concern now is Saka. The extent of the thigh problem that forced him off after just 10 minutes has not been confirmed in match reports, and Arsenal will be watching it closely. Eze’s performance in his place, though, was a timely reminder of the options Arteta has in reserve.

For Bayern, the result is a missed opportunity to put a rival firmly behind them, though Kane’s form continues to carry them. For Arsenal, it was a night of character, resilience, and a late, deserved equaliser from one of the team’s most important players.
