Jalayshia “Malayshia” Alford, 10, Missing West Philadelphia Girl, Found Dead Inside Relative’s Vehicle Trunk in Lindenwold, New Jersey, After Weeklong Search; Conflicting Foster Mother Accounts Raise Questions in Investigation

The body of 10-year-old Jalayshia “Malayshia” Alford, who disappeared from West Philadelphia on October 26, 2026, has reportedly been discovered inside the trunk of a vehicle in Lindenwold, New Jersey, bringing a heartbreaking end to the weeklong search for the missing child.

Multiple law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation confirmed that Jalayshia’s body was found inside the vehicle. According to additional reports, the vehicle belonged to a relative of her foster mother. Lindenwold is approximately 25 to 30 minutes from the West Philadelphia neighborhood where the girl lived in foster care and was last seen.

Authorities have not yet released her official cause or manner of death. Investigators are examining how her body ended up inside the vehicle and the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.

The discovery followed an extensive investigation involving the Philadelphia Police Department, the FBI and the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office.

Jalayshia Alford Disappeared on Her Way to School

Jalayshia, also known as Malayshia or May, was last seen alive at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Monday, October 26, near the 500 block of North Simpson Street in West Philadelphia.

Her foster mother reportedly told investigators that the child had left home to walk to a school bus stop but never returned.

Authorities described Jalayshia as 4 feet 11 inches tall and weighing approximately 70 pounds. When she disappeared, she was reportedly wearing a blue school uniform, glasses and either Crocs or black sneakers.

Police issued a missing-child advisory warning that she could be at special risk of harm or injury, prompting an extensive search across the neighborhood and surrounding areas.

Conflicting Accounts From Foster Mother Raise Questions

As investigators worked to establish what happened to Jalayshia, questions emerged about the timeline of her disappearance and the accounts reportedly given by her foster mother.

Jalayshia’s aunt, Yolanda Brown, said the foster mother initially contacted her and claimed that the child’s biological mother had taken her.

Family members and authorities subsequently contacted the biological mother, but Jalayshia was not with her.

The foster mother reportedly later told investigators that Jalayshia had left home to walk to the school bus stop and failed to return. According to the information provided, authorities were not contacted about the disappearance until the afternoon of October 26, several hours after the child was last seen.

The difference between the initial explanation reportedly given to the aunt and the account later provided to investigators has raised questions about what the foster mother knew and when she became aware that Jalayshia was missing.

However, authorities have not publicly established that the foster mother was involved in the child’s death or announced any charges against her. Investigators are continuing to examine the accounts and timeline as part of the case.

Police Used Search Dogs and Reviewed Surveillance Footage

The search for Jalayshia involved multiple law enforcement agencies and several investigative methods.

Philadelphia homicide detectives, including investigators specializing in digital forensics, worked alongside FBI agents and other police personnel. Officers canvassed neighborhoods, asked residents for surveillance recordings, reviewed Ring camera footage and used search dogs to look for possible evidence.

On Monday evening, investigators concentrated their efforts in the 500 block of North Simpson Street, where cadaver dogs were seen searching outside a home and officers examined the surrounding area.

Earlier, on Wednesday evening, investigators had searched a field in West Philadelphia but discovered the body of an animal rather than the missing girl.

The subsequent discovery in Lindenwold shifted the investigation toward the vehicle and the people connected to it.

Neighbors and Former Teacher Remember Missing Girl

Before the discovery, residents and people who knew Jalayshia had expressed growing concern about her disappearance.

Pauline Rosenberg, the owner of the home police searched on North Simpson Street, described Jalayshia as a sweet and shy child who was not likely to run away.

Rosenberg said she was disturbed to learn that the girl had been missing for a week and expressed sympathy for her tenant, who was connected to the home where investigators had concentrated their search.

Jalayshia’s former teacher, Tashonna Moore, also spoke about the child, remembering her as kind and well-behaved.

“She was so sweet and kind. She didn’t do nothing to anybody,” Moore said.

Moore described being devastated by the news of Jalayshia’s disappearance, explaining that she cried throughout the day and struggled to focus after hearing what had happened.

Authorities Await Answers About 10-Year-Old’s Death

Although Jalayshia’s body has reportedly been located, several important questions remain unanswered.

Investigators are working to establish when she died, what caused her death, how her body came to be inside the vehicle and whether anyone will face criminal charges.

The official cause and manner of death have not been released, and authorities have not publicly identified anyone as responsible.

The investigation remains ongoing as law enforcement agencies continue reviewing evidence and examining the conflicting accounts surrounding the child’s disappearance.
