Caitlyn Colter, 25, of Blair, Nebraska, and her brother Cameron Colter, 20, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, died Saturday morning after their Kia Forte ran a stop sign and was struck by a semi truck at the intersection of 204th Street and Bennington Road, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Caitlyn was pronounced dead at the scene; Cameron died later at Nebraska Medical Center.
A short drive near Bennington turned into a tragedy that’s left one family grieving two losses at once.
What Happened at 204th and Bennington
Around 10 a.m. Saturday, September 12, a semitrailer truck hauling a dumpster was headed south on North 204th Street when it struck the driver’s side of a Kia Forte traveling east on Bennington Road, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators determined the Kia had gone through a stop sign before entering the intersection.
Caitlyn Colter, who was driving, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her brother Cameron, a passenger, was rushed to Nebraska Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. The driver of the semi was not injured.
North 204th Street was closed between Rainwood Road and Nebraska Highway 36 while investigators worked the scene, with drivers rerouted to 216th Street or 180th Street.
A Family’s Loss
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office extended condolences to the Colter family in its statement on the crash.
“The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office extends our heartfelt condolences to the Colter family,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with the Colter family and their friends.”
Loved ones have described the loss of the siblings as devastating, and the sheriff’s office statement reflects a family now facing an unimaginable few weeks ahead.
