Every Emmys ceremony has a handful of moments that outlast the actual awards — clips people are still sharing days later, long after anyone remembers who won Best Directing. This year, that moment came courtesy of Marcello Hernández, who used roughly ninety seconds of stage time to turn a routine presenter slot into one of the most-replayed bits of the night.
The Setup: A Comedian With Nothing to Lose
Hernández was making his Emmys debut, tasked with handing out the award for Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 14. It’s typically a thankless assignment — read the nominees, open the envelope, walk off. Instead, he opened with a disclaimer that doubled as a warning shot.
“It’s an honor for me to be here,” he told the crowd at the Peacock Theater. “It’s my first time at the Emmys. I get to present so I just want to take this opportunity to say hi to a few people I might not be able to say hi to later.”
That single sentence explains everything that followed. Rather than treating his moment onstage as a formality, Hernández treated it as a once-in-a-lifetime chance to talk to people he’d otherwise never get close to — and he wasn’t going to waste it on small talk backstage.
His date for the evening, incidentally, tells you something about his comedic instincts: he brought his mother, Isabel Cancela, who’s long been a recurring character in his stand-up. When USA Today asked who’d accompanied him, he milked the question for a full bit before admitting the answer. “Who’s my date? Don’t you know my date? You don’t know who this is? Oh buddy, oh buddy, you have a lot to learn,” he said, before relenting: “No, I’m kidding. It’s my mom, bro.”
Working the Room, One Legend at a Time
Hernández’s first target was Harrison Ford, nominated that night for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for “Shrinking.” He didn’t ease into it — he called Ford a legend and an inspiration on the spot, then invited him to dinner. Ford’s expression suggested he hadn’t seen it coming, which arguably made the moment land harder.
Then came the one that actually broke the internet: Zendaya, seated next to her husband, Tom Holland, and nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for “Euphoria.” Hernández didn’t bother pretending he could play it cool.
“I want to say hi to Zendaya,” he said. “You’re a beast and you’re amazing, and I saw you, and I wanted to play it cool, and I’ve decided I can’t do that. So, I would like to invite you and Spider-Man to have dinner at my house.”
The “Spider-Man” line worked precisely because it wasn’t a stretch — Holland and Zendaya’s real relationship grew out of their onscreen one as Peter Parker and MJ, so the joke landed as an inside reference rather than a reach. Zendaya cracked up immediately, then turned to share the moment with Holland, who was clapping along beside her. Within hours, a clip posted by the Today Show had racked up more than a million views on Instagram alone — a reminder that award-show internet virality has less to do with who wins and more to do with who’s funny enough to make the cameras cut away from the podium.
Hernández kept going. He greeted Oscar Isaac next, leaning into their shared last name to joke that they might be cousins and that he’d see him around Christmas. He closed out his tour of the room with Matthew McConaughey — who wasn’t even in his seat at the time, since he and Woody Harrelson were slated to present Outstanding Comedy Series later that night. Undeterred, Hernández told a story about his aunt once promising him that if he worked hard enough, he might someday get to spend time with McConaughey. “I’m basically doing it,” he said.

It Wasn’t Just Hernández’s Night for Zendaya
The dinner invite was a highlight, but it was one moment in a busy evening for Zendaya specifically. She’d already taken the stage earlier as a presenter herself, handing the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series award to Jean Smart for “Hacks” — reportedly Smart’s fifth win in that category, a genuinely historic run. Zendaya’s own nomination didn’t convert into a win; that trophy went to Rhea Seehorn for “Pluribus,” who got a standing ovation from the room when her name was called.
Off the stage, Zendaya’s appearance was generating its own headlines. She debuted a new pixie cut on the carpet, paired with a custom Prada gown and Mikimoto jewelry, with longtime stylist Law Roach on hand to manage her train before she walked in. Holland, by contrast, kept things low-key in an all-black look and largely avoided extended carpet time. Host Mariska Hargitay opened her monologue by reworking Nicole Kidman’s famous AMC theater ad for a TV-focused crowd — a bit clearly built to needle the film crowd in the room. When Kidman, seated in the audience, called out “That’s mine, that’s my bit, you can’t do that,” Hargitay didn’t miss a beat: “Zip it, movie lady — it’s TV’s turn tonight.”
Between the two exchanges, the night made a strong case for something awards shows often forget: the best moments usually happen when someone onstage decides the script isn’t worth following.
