Arsenal came from behind to beat Leeds United 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, with Riccardo Calafiori equalizing in the 62nd minute and substitute Bruno Guimarães scoring a low winner in the 70th, eight minutes after James Justin had put Leeds ahead. The win lifts Arsenal to 15 points from six matches, level with leaders Manchester City, and hands Leeds their first defeat of the season.
For an hour, this looked like the kind of afternoon that derails a title defense. Then Arsenal remembered who they were.
A Flat First Half
The reigning champions struggled against a well-organized Leeds side, and Arsenal created very few clear chances in the first 45 minutes. The assistant referee flagged them offside five times, which drew angry reactions from the stands, and the home crowd grew restless as the half dragged on.
Mikel Arteta, who had signed a new four-year contract just days earlier, later looked to have made a selection mistake, starting a half-fit Kai Havertz up front while Viktor Gyökeres, a pure centre forward with only 29 Premier League minutes to his name this season, waited on the bench.
Leeds had the better of the late chances before the break. Goalkeeper David Raya threw himself in front of a fierce close-range shot from Gabriel Gudmundsson a minute before halftime, and then had to scramble back after charging off his line to punch a cross clear. He later claimed a looping Ethan Ampadu header.
Leeds Take the Lead
Leeds went ahead in the 55th minute. A charge down the left by Gudmundsson produced a low cross that Raya dived onto and pushed clear, but only as far as James Justin, who was unmarked on the right edge of the box and slammed the ball home. Gyökeres and Guimarães were already warming up on the touchline when the goal went in.
Arsenal Respond
The reply was immediate. In the 62nd minute, Riccardo Calafiori steered the ball home after a knock-down from Ben White. It was his sixth goal for the club since joining in 2024, and the first one he has scored at home, with all of his previous goals coming away from the Emirates.
Arteta then turned to his bench, bringing on Guimarães, Jurriën Timber, and Gyökeres together. The change paid off within minutes.

The Winner
In the 70th minute, a quickly taken free kick was passed between several players, with Martin Ødegaard involved before a sublime flick from Declan Rice teed up Guimarães, who drove a low shot into the bottom-left corner from the edge of the area.
It was the Brazilian’s second goal for Arsenal, after his strike against Sunderland last month, and his first at home. He celebrated by diving into the crowd. Signed from Newcastle United for a reported £75 million this summer, Guimarães has now made a decisive contribution off the bench in back-to-back appearances.
Seaman’s Scarf and the Table
Before kickoff, Arsenal legend David Seaman walked out wearing a half-and-half scarf. It was a fitting image for a first half that looked indecisive, though Seaman has a good excuse: he grew up a Leeds fan and started his career at the club.
The result leaves Arsenal level on points with Manchester City, who play on Sunday and hold the superior goal difference and a game in hand. Later on Saturday, Manchester United host Tottenham after four other Premier League matches.
For Arsenal, it was a reminder that champions can win on days when everything feels wrong. For Leeds, it was an encouraging performance that ended without a point.
