Brighton thrashed defending champions Arsenal 3-0 at the American Express Stadium, with goals from Pascal Groß, Charalampos Kostoulas, and Chema Andres handing Mikel Arteta’s side their first defeat of the season. The result ended Arsenal’s pursuit of an eighth straight win to open the campaign — which would have been their best start in 123 years — and lifted Brighton to third in the table, two points behind Arsenal.
Arsenal came to the south coast chasing history. They left with their first loss of the season, and by most accounts, got off lightly at only 3-0.
A Lesson From the First Minute
The Gunners were chasing an eighth consecutive win to start the season — their best opening run in 123 years — but instead were given what can only be described as a lesson in commitment and quality by Fabian Hürzeler’s Brighton side, right from kickoff.
Brighton’s high press unsettled Arsenal almost immediately. In one early scare, David Raya’s attempted pass out from the back went straight to Yasin Ayari, with only a strong recovery challenge from Declan Rice denying a clear sight of goal. Raya had already been forced into a save moments earlier, diving to his right to tip a Kostoulas drive around the post.
The Goals That Broke Arsenal Open
Brighton took a deserved lead in the 31st minute. Groß was afforded far too much time and space roughly 20 yards out, and his effort thumped off the base of the near post and in — extending his recent hot streak to four goals in five games across all competitions.
The story repeated itself for Brighton’s second, right on the stroke of halftime. Both Rice and Gabriel Magalhães backed off Kostoulas as he picked up the ball, and the Greek forward spun and fired a low effort into the bottom-left corner from 25 yards, beating Raya again. It capped a brutal opening 45 minutes for Arsenal, who didn’t manage a single meaningful chance of their own until the 44th minute.
Brighton weren’t finished. Nine minutes into the second half, Groß swung in a deep corner from the left, and with Raya rooted to his line, Chema Andres rose above both Gabriel and Martin Ødegaard to head home his first Premier League start goal, helped by a slight deflection off the near post — extending Brighton’s Premier League-leading goal tally to 16 for the season.
Arsenal’s misery nearly deepened further. Pascal Struijk narrowly headed wide from a corner Raya failed to claim, Kostoulas had a penalty appeal waved away after a desperate Gabriel lunge, and late in the match, Matt O’Riley was denied one-on-one by Raya before Malick Yalcoüyé struck the woodwork on the rebound. Bukayo Saka had Arsenal’s best chance of the afternoon and couldn’t convert, while Kai Havertz squandered the Gunners’ only real moment of anxiety for the home crowd.
A Historic Result for Brighton
Brighton marked their club’s 125th anniversary with a special one-off kit for the occasion — and delivered a performance to match. This is now the third consecutive season Brighton have beaten the reigning Premier League champions at home, following wins over Manchester City in 2024-25 and Liverpool in 2025-26.
For Arsenal, it was their first time trailing by three goals in a Premier League match since May 2023 — fittingly, also against Brighton, in a 3-0 defeat that effectively ended their title challenge that season.
The Numbers Behind the Upset
Despite holding just 40.3% possession, Brighton out-shot Arsenal 17 to 11, and generated four Opta-defined big chances to Arsenal’s two, even though their underlying expected-goals figure (1.33 xG) was actually lower than Arsenal’s (1.58 xG). The difference came down to finishing: both Groß and Kostoulas scored from well outside the box, continuing a troubling pattern for Arsenal defensively — seven of the last 18 Premier League goals they’ve conceded have come from outside the 18-yard box, including three of four this season alone.
Individually, Groß has now scored in three consecutive matches for Brighton for the first time in his career across all competitions, while Kostoulas already has six goal involvements in 2026-27 — double his total from the entirety of last season.
Where the Table Stands
The result lifts Brighton to third, just two points behind Arsenal heading into the first international break of the season. Manchester City, meanwhile, can move three points clear at the top with a win over Sunderland on Super Sunday.
