Bournemouth 2-0 Sunderland: Evanilson Scores 100th Career Goal and Sets Up Marcus Tavernier as Cherries Beat 10-Man Sunderland After Kevin Danso Red Card for First Premier League Win

Bournemouth 2-0 Sunderland was the final score at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday, as the Cherries claimed their first Premier League win of the season. Marcus Tavernier headed Bournemouth in front in the sixth minute from an Evanilson assist, Sunderland defender Kevin Danso was sent off in the 17th minute for hauling down Evanilson, and the Brazilian striker scored his own, reportedly the 100th goal of his career, three minutes after the break.

Bournemouth finally have their first Premier League win of the campaign, and they got it the way every team dreams of: a fast start, a red card, and a striker at the top of his game. The Cherries beat a 10-man Sunderland 2-0 on the south coast, with Evanilson involved in both goals and in the moment that changed the match.

Tavernier Heads Bournemouth Ahead After a Defensive Mix-Up

The hosts made a lively start, and it took just six minutes to find a breakthrough. After Tyler Adams’ early attempt through a crowd and a block from Danso on Evanilson’s initial effort, a long ball over the top had Sunderland’s back line in trouble. Danso and Omar Alderete made a mess of their attempt to stop the speedy Brazilian reaching it.

Evanilson could have taken the chance himself. Instead, he unselfishly squared the ball to the unmarked Marcus Tavernier, who planted a header past a visibly frustrated Robin Roefs to make it 1-0.

Danso Sent Off for a Professional Foul

Sunderland’s afternoon went from bad to worse in the 17th minute. Another long ball, again chased down by Evanilson, left the striker as the last man, and Danso dragged him down. Referee Craig Pawson’s decision to dismiss the defender was almost immediate, and Sunderland were reduced to 10 men with more than 70 minutes still to play.

Tavernier curled the resulting free-kick over the bar, and there was a lengthy pause as Sunderland’s Nordi Mukiele received treatment for what looked like a leg issue, before he was able to carry on.

Bournemouth Waste Chances, Then Evanilson Strikes Again

The Cherries probably wanted more from their man advantage before half-time. Roefs saved from Rayan shortly after the half-hour mark, and Adam Smith couldn’t redirect the follow-up from an awkward angle. Late in the half, Evanilson had the chance to double the lead when the Sunderland goalkeeper came off his line, but he curled his effort over the empty net.

He made no mistake after the restart. Three minutes into the second half, Alderete played a poor back-pass, and Evanilson pounced, patiently rounding Roefs before finishing low into the corner. According to match reports, it was the 100th goal of his career, and it made him a scorer in a third successive game in all competitions.

Sunderland Struggle to Create

With Bournemouth in control, the visitors never really threatened. Mukiele made a timely tackle to deny Evanilson another golden opportunity, and Roefs saved a sharp effort from Rayan, but Sunderland failed to register a shot on target all afternoon. Tavernier drew another save from Roefs shortly after the hour, and substitute Justin Kluivert missed a chance to make it three in stoppage time before the Cherries comfortably closed out the contest.

Sunderland did enjoy a brief spell deep in the hosts’ half late on, but it produced nothing to trouble the Bournemouth goal, and the visitors’ tough afternoon ended without a consolation.

What It Means

For Bournemouth, the result is a much-needed boost after a difficult start to the league season. Evanilson was the standout, contributing a goal and an assist, while the team showed good organization and patience once Danso was sent off, limiting Sunderland’s opportunities without being drawn into anything reckless.

For Sunderland, it was a rare setback after a positive spell that included back-to-back Europa League wins, and one in which an early red card and two defensive errors made a difficult day impossible. Régis Le Bris’s side will look to bounce back quickly, while Bournemouth will hope this first Premier League win of the season is the start of something more.
