A Shell Lake firefighter has been identified as the victim of a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred early Monday morning near Spooner, Wisconsin. Brian Carlson, 34, of Spooner, died after a pickup truck pulled onto U.S. Highway 63 and struck him.
What Happened
The crash occurred just after 8:15 a.m. Monday on U.S. Highway 63 outside Spooner, in Washburn County. Investigators said Carlson was riding his motorcycle south on the highway when a pickup pulled onto the road and collided with him. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
The 43-year-old driver of the pickup was not injured. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says the investigation into the crash is ongoing, and no charges have been announced at this time. Carlson was formally identified as the victim on Tuesday morning.
Nearly Eight Years of Service
Carlson had served with the Shell Lake Fire Department for nearly eight years at the time of his death. According to the department, his contributions extended well beyond emergency response calls — he took part in regular training and remained available to help community members whenever they needed him.
The department shared a tribute on Facebook remembering Carlson’s dedication to the community he served:
“Throughout his years with our department, he gave his time, his energy, and his heart to serving the people of our community. Whether responding to an emergency, training alongside his brothers and sisters, or simply being there when someone needed help, he truly embodied what it means to serve.”
Officials said Carlson’s death has left a lasting impact on the department and everyone who knew him.
“His passing leaves an unimaginable void in our department and in the lives of all who knew him,” the department said, extending condolences to Carlson’s family, friends, and fellow firefighters.
How to Honor His Memory
According to Carlson’s obituary, his family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Shell Lake Fire Department in his memory.
