Coventry 4-1 Newcastle: Sidiki Cherif Stars as Sky Blues Claim First Premier League Home Win at the CBS Arena and Climb Out of the Relegation Zone

Coventry City beat Newcastle United 4-1 at the CBS Arena on Monday night, earning their first Premier League home win at the stadium and their first top-flight win on home soil since a 1-0 victory over Sunderland in April 2001. The result lifts Frank Lampard’s side from 19th to 14th and extends their winning run to two matches.

Coventry Make History

The win makes Coventry the first club in 127 years to win consecutive English top-flight matches immediately after losing their opening four games without scoring. They took their first points of the season with a 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest before the international break, and it is also their first win over Newcastle since 1999.

The result is a major boost to Coventry’s survival bid in their first Premier League season since 2001.

How the Goals Came

6′ — Rudoni (penalty). Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek failed to gather a loose ball under pressure from Ephron Mason-Clark, then tripped Sidiki Cherif as he tried to recover. Referee John Brooks pointed straight to the spot, and Jack Rudoni sent Hornicek the wrong way for Coventry’s first Premier League goal at the CBS Arena, their home since 2005.

48′ — Cherif. Three minutes after the break, Newcastle failed to deal with a long throw and the 19-year-old Cherif, making his first Premier League start after joining from Fenerbahce in the summer, struck a low shot from the edge of the area into the bottom corner.

70′ — Botman. Sven Botman gave Newcastle hope with a powerful 20-yard strike that left Carl Rushworth with no chance.

81′ — Simms. Joelinton, playing for the first time in an injury-hit season, took a heavy touch on the edge of his own area. Ellis Simms pounced with his first touch after coming off the bench, and his shot deflected past Hornicek.

86′ — Mfuni. Stephen Mfuni, on loan from Manchester City, rounded off the night with a long-range strike that went in off the post.

Newcastle Punished for Missed Chances

Matthias Jaissle’s side dominated possession for long spells after going behind but could not convert. Harvey Barnes flicked a close-range effort narrowly wide and later fired straight at Rushworth when well placed to equalise. Jacob Murphy sent a long-range shot just over the bar.

Matias Fernandez-Pardo was Newcastle’s most likely scorer before half-time and was denied twice by Bobby Thomas. Thomas cleared one of his shots off the line, then recovered to block another after Fernandez-Pardo had rounded Rushworth, on the stroke of half-time. Fernandez-Pardo also dummied a Murphy cross at the near post when a touch would have turned it in.

After the break, Cherif missed a chance to make it 3-0 after poor defending from Botman, and Joe Willock blazed over at the other end.

Standout Performers

Cherif was the story of the night. The teenager won the penalty and scored the second goal, and his performance turned a dream first league start into a lasting memory. Thomas was the defensive hero, with two goal-line clearances keeping Newcastle’s first-half pressure from paying off.

What It Means

Newcastle began the night 11th with the chance to move into fourth with a win. Instead they were beaten for the second time in six league games this season.

Coventry now turn to a trip to Tottenham on October 19, where they will look to make it three straight wins.
