Sporting CP continued their perfect start to the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League campaign with a professional 2-0 win away at RC Lens on Tuesday night, moving top of the league phase standings with a maximum six points from two matches.
Suárez Breaks the Deadlock
Lens started brightly at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis and created several early opportunities, dominating possession in the opening stages. But despite that early pressure, only Florian Thauvin managed to produce a shot on target inside the first 20 minutes, with Sporting remaining compact and difficult to break down.
The visitors grew into the game and were rewarded in the 22nd minute. Nestory Irankunda delivered a smart pass toward the edge of the six-yard box, and Luis Suárez darted across his marker to turn the ball home from close range. The goal made the Colombian forward Sporting’s outright leading scorer in this season’s Champions League.
Lens came close to an immediate response. Just past the half-hour mark, Suárez nearly doubled his tally after breaking free of the last defender with only the goalkeeper to beat, but Robin Risser produced a vital save to keep Lens in the match. Two minutes later, it was the hosts’ turn to threaten an equalizer, as Franjo Ivanović’s curling 25-yard strike cracked off the woodwork, to the relief of the traveling Sporting supporters.
A Quiet Start to the Second Half Turns Decisive
The second half opened in low-key fashion before coming to life around the hour mark. Sporting goalkeeper Kaique Pereira produced an outstanding save to tip Amadou Haïdara’s long-range effort over the bar and preserve his side’s lead. Chances continued at both ends — João Simões was denied by an unorthodox stop from Risser, while Lens’ Odsonne Édouard forced another strong save from Kaique at his near post.
With Lens throwing players forward in search of an equalizer, their defense was left exposed, and Sporting capitalized on the counterattack. In the 74th minute, substitute Silas Andersen played a perfectly weighted through ball to release Issa Doumbia in behind the Lens defense. The midfielder kept his composure, raced clear, and coolly slotted the ball past the advancing Risser to make it 2-0 and secure all three points in front of a subdued home crowd.
By the Numbers
Despite Lens generating slightly higher expected goals across the match, Sporting’s efficiency in front of goal and disciplined defensive organization proved decisive. The result extends Sporting’s unbeaten away run to 11 matches in all competitions since March — and marks just their second victory in nine trips to France.
Lens, meanwhile, were unable to build on their opening-matchday win at Slavia Prague, suffering just their third defeat in 30 home games in UEFA competition.
What’s Next
The win leaves Sporting with a maximum six points from two games at the top of the Champions League standings, while Lens remain on three points from their opening two matches. Sporting will look to build on this strong European form in their next Champions League fixture.
