Manchester United 4-0 Sabah: Cunha, Fernandes, Sesko and Martinez Star as Red Devils Make Statement in Champions League Return

Manchester United marked their long-awaited return to the Champions League with a commanding 4-0 win over Azerbaijani debutants Sabah at Old Trafford. Goals from Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Sesko, and Lisandro Martinez gave Michael Carrick’s side a comfortable night, 1,003 days after their last appearance in Europe’s premier club competition.

Manchester United’s return to the Champions League couldn’t have gone much smoother. Michael Carrick’s side cruised to a 4-0 win over competition debutants Sabah of Azerbaijan, marking the club’s 300th match at Europe’s top table in style.

A Comfortable Return to the Big Stage

It was United’s first Champions League outing in 1,003 days, and with the match falling on a Thursday night against the champions of Azerbaijan, it carried more of a Europa League feel than a night among Europe’s elite. Tougher tests certainly await United as the league phase progresses, but after a bumpy start to the domestic season, this was exactly the straightforward evening the Red Devils needed.

Carrick made four changes from Sunday’s late draw at Everton, and United started brightly, with Cunha forcing an early save and Noussair Mazraoui striking the side-netting. Sabah, playing in their first-ever European league phase match just days after celebrating their ninth birthday as a club, were pinned back for long stretches in what often resembled a straightforward defensive exercise against relentless United pressure.

United Break the Deadlock

The breakthrough United’s dominance deserved arrived in the 27th minute. Patrick Dorgu, deployed at left-back in Luke Shaw’s absence, whipped in a superb first-time cross that Cunha met at close range, driving it into the ground and into the net.

Sabah nearly produced a stunning response. Kaheem Parris drove into the box and squared a perfect cross to Joy-Lance Mickels, who somehow headed wide of an open goal — a glaring miss the Sabah striker could scarcely believe.

United made them pay. Six minutes later, summer signing Youri Tielemans showed excellent awareness to cut the ball back for Bruno Fernandes, who slotted home to make it 2-0. The Red Devils weren’t finished before the break, either — in the 45th minute, Bryan Mbeumo played Benjamin Sesko clean through on goal, and the striker coolly rounded goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov and rolled the ball into an empty net on his first start of the season, putting United 3-0 up at halftime.

Martinez Seals the Result

With the result effectively decided, Carrick used the second half to manage his squad ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby against Manchester City, who will have had two extra days to prepare. Mason Mount replaced Tielemans at the break, and the second period settled into a lower-key rhythm.

Sabah’s Tymoteusz Puchacz fired a long-range free-kick narrowly wide as the visitors searched for a consolation goal, but United struck from a set piece shortly after. Fernandes floated a quick free-kick to substitute Joshua Zirkzee, whose clever backheel created enough chaos in the box for Lisandro Martinez to stab home in the 68th minute, rounding out the scoring at 4-0.

Sabah pushed for a memorable moment to cap their historic European debut — Mickels fired wide, and substitute Orphe Mbina clipped the crossbar in stoppage time — but there was no consolation goal to be found.

What It Means

The win gives United a perfect start to their league phase campaign as they look to make the most of their return to Europe’s top competition. With Manchester City awaiting on Sunday, Carrick will have welcomed both the result and the chance to rest key players ahead of one of the biggest fixtures of the season.
